Q1. How did you get started with CALSIAN activities?

When I was in high school, I was looking for a department related to life sciences. I got to know about the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and searched for it in many ways. One day, I searched for “CALS,” an English abbreviation for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, on Instagram. The first thing that came out was the 'CALSIAN' account, and I got to know their activities. After that I actually entered CALS, and I started CALSIAN thinking that I could do meaningful activities for students who wanted to get information about it.

Q2. One of CALSIAN's activities is to visit high schools and promote them. What do you mainly promote?

‘Visiting CALSIAN’ is said to be the flower of CALSIAN activities. It is to introduce and promote agriculture and CALS by visiting high schools in various regions. We tell students the broad and precise meaning of agriculture, which may be unfamiliar, and various stories related to it. We are also promoting the ‘Seoul National University’s College of Agriculture and Life Science’. We are introducing the 7 departments and 15 majors of CALS, and delivering interesting research stories conducted in each major and laboratory.

Q3. You have carried out many projects as another activity. What would be a representative project?

Members are conducting a project to create promotional materials for the online platform and post them on Instagram. We also helped the CALS student administration office and took charge of various face-to-face events including the 'Agricultural Day' event. Through the ‘CALS alumni interview’, we conducted a project to provide useful materials to undergraduate students. Besides, we carried out a project to revise the manual internally so that we can operate the PR group more efficiently.

Q4. Is there anything that left an impression on you other than camp activities?

I think the youth career camp at the southern Seoul National University Forest was the most impressive. It was good that I participated as a mentor and gave various advice, but it was even better to hear the students' stories. While spending a few days with the students, I was able to know what thoughts and worries the students have these days. There were some great students who gave me new perspectives that I hadn't thought of before.

Q5. When was the most proud and rewarding time while working with CALSIAN?

Some of the new members said that CALSIAN visited their high school, which motivated them to apply to CALS and CALSIAN. Although I did not visit the schools of the members, I felt proud as I thought that CALSIAN was doing a really meaningful activity.

Q6. Please tell us about the attractive points you felt while running CALSIAN.

I think the activity itself is so meaningful and attractive. All activities are difficult to experience not only for students but also for us. So, being able to do various activities is a big attraction. And the members who work together are really close. In my case, I go there often enough to say that I live in the CALSIAN club room. I think it's natural because we've been really busy doing various activities together for two years. I think it's really fascinating that you can make such deep friends in college.

Q7. Please introduce the future operation plan of CALSIAN.

The biggest goal of this year is to continue the 20-year tradition and finish what we have done and what we are good at. In addition, we plan to improve various programs so that CALSIAN can develop further.

Q8. Lastly, which students would you recommend CALSIAN to?

Any student who is proud of their major and CALS and wants to promote it is welcome. And after CALSIAN activities, you will be better at presenting than anyone else. There are also various competency development programs for members, so I highly recommend it to students who want to achieve personal growth along with promoting CALS!
