CALSIAN, a public relations group of Seoul National University's College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, is playing a major role in enhancing the understanding and interest of agriculture and the Seoul National University's College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. Among the programs being conducted by CALSIAN, the “Visiting CALSIAN” is a program where members visit high schools across the country during their vacation to introduce agriculture and agricultural students. To learn more about this, I met Lee Soo-bin, who is currently the head of CALSIAN.

Q. Please introduce yourself.

A. I'm Lee Soo-bin, the head of the public relations group CALSIAN at Seoul National University's College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.

Q. What kind of program is the visiting CALSIAN?

A. Visiting CALSIAN is a program where members visit high schools in different regions in person during the vacation to inform them of the value of our college and agriculture.

Q. What activities did you do in the visiting CALSIAN program last winter?

A. Last winter, we visited Busan, Daegu, and Changwon to introduce agriculture, agricultural majors at Seoul National University, and student competency development programs. In addition, since it is targeting high school students, I also introduced admission screening and mentoring activities.

Q. What do you think is the most important thing about the visiting CALSIAN program?

A. In fact, while promoting it, I was able to meet many students who did not know about the agricultural college. The most important thing is to let these students know the value of the agricultural and to induce students who already know to pay more attention. To this end, it informs the meaning of modern agriculture and explains that the research field of modern agriculture is not only much more diverse but also in contact with the field of advanced biotechnology. In particular, we are trying to convey that out college is actively conducting education and research for the development of the agricultural sector in Korea.

Q. What impressed you the most while working on the Visiting CALSIAN program?

A. There were often moments when I could realize the influence of Calsian because it was an official organization belonging to Seoul National University's Admissions and Career Information Office. In fact, there are students who got to know and applied for the College of Agriculture and Life science at Seoul National University through the visiting CALSIAN program, and there are also members who applied for the visiting CALSIAN program. So, it is very rewarding to hear reviews of various programs, including the visiting CALSIAN. There is a person around me who participated in the CALSIAN program when I was a high school student, and I was proud of him because he remembered us and told me that the College of Agriculture and Life Science was a cool college.

Q. What's the hardest thing about going through the visiting CALSIAN program?

A. The purpose of the program is to promote “College” of Seoul National University, but it is difficult when there are students who are more interested in Seoul National University than in agriculture or agricultural life sciences. I remember it was difficult when I made a public relations presentation trying to draw interest in a situation where the majority of students were not interested. And there were times when there were minor difficulties because each school had different places to conduct programs. In fact, it was regrettable that there was a time when it was not possible to conduct detailed question-and-answer sessions like 1:1 mentoring in the case of conducting in the auditorium.

Q. Are there any programs that are being conducted for high school students other than the visiting CALSIAN?

A.
CALSIAN is running a wide variety of programs. I upload a card news on my official Instagram account that contains information on biotechnology and agriculture. In addition, we run various experimental classes and camps on our own or in cooperation with external companies. There are Academic Forest Youth Career Camp, Agricultural and Life Sciences Youth Camp, and Experimental Classes. In addition, when we come on a group tour from high school to our college, we are conducting various mentoring programs as a tour assistant.

Q. What are your plans for the future?

A. It is to show high school students a wonderful promotional group and role model so that they can know the value of our college and be more active so that they can consider applying for our college. And I want to increase my influence so that high school students and members of our college, as well as the whole of Seoul National University, can have a positive perception of CALSIAN. And despite the fact that there are many programs and support provided by the college of agricultural and life science, I think it is important to let them know internally and externally. Lastly, I want to strengthen the link between the seniors who graduated from Kalsian and the current members of the group to create an atmosphere that attracts each other by strengthening the bond between the members of CALSIAN.

It was confirmed that various programs conducted by CALSIAN play a major role in raising awareness of modern agriculture and our college. CALSIAN’s continued efforts to contribute to promoting interest and interest in various fields related to modern agriculture are expected.
