CALS International Internship Program

2017-11-09l Hit 2257

Each year, the CALS International Internship Program offers both undergraduate and graduate students of CALS an opportunity to gain experience overseas interning at international firms, Korean firms in international locations, or international organizations. Through the program, students can explore working life in the real world, develop their field experience, and gain a competitive advantage in the future job market.

To apply to the program, students are required to arrange their own placement in an approved company or organization. With confirmed placement, students are then required to submit an internship proposal addressing their motivation and aspirations for application, the reasons for choosing the institution, the status of the arrangement, a schedule, and a detailed activity plan. The eligibility is as follows. Undergraduate students should have registered at CALS at least three semesters and have earned an average GPA of 3.0 or higher. All graduate students at CALS at both the masters and doctoral levels can apply.

The selection is made based on the two-stage review process: a preliminary review of the proposal and a presentation. Proposals displaying a strong motivation and detailed plan will have a higher chance of selection. The award includes a maximum of 3 million KRW that covers partial or total living expenses and round-trip airfare.

Interning students are required to work at least 90 hours during the internship period during summer or winter breaks. This internship program is in its 15th iteration thus far; students have participated in internships at various institutions from mainly overseas universities and companies. Students may apply for the 16th internship program before the November 7, 2017 deadline.

Following is a memoir from Jin-Gil Lee (Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development 12) who participated in the 15th internship program and worked for Concordia Language Villages (CLV) in Bemidji, Minnesota, United States.

"My five-week experience as a camp staff member was the best experience of my life. Everyone needs new experiences and new stimuli, regardless of what they are.

It was a completely new experience that I’ve never had. Before, I had never earned money overseas, I had never worked with foreigners, I had never taught students for an extended period, and I had never gone camping. I’ve done all those things there for the first time in my life. This is probably why I felt more and learned more than others would probably have. It’s fortunate that these were all good experiences.

I want to thank the international internship program at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Seoul National University. The economic support was greatly helpful in my decision to join the camp program."
