Since its foundation 110 years ago, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) has played a leading role in advancing the national economy— it is frequently referred to as “the miracle on the Han River.” CALS addressed post-Korean War problems with poverty and hunger with the development and dissemination of the Tongil rice variety through the Green and White Revolutions, and turned the war-scarred land into green terrain through active reforestation.

Now, with the decline of the agricultural industry, we are facing a new challenge: renewing our education and research systems to continue contributing to solutions toward national and global issues of today. CALS has forged ahead with multi-pronged efforts, such as moving the campus from Suwon, Kyunggi province to the Gwanak main campus in Seoul and founding the new research and education facility in Pyungchang, Gangwon province. That said, an even larger revolutionary change is needed to anticipate and mitigate future challenges.

In the era of the 4th industrial revolution, agriculture is the core of the 6th-industry, the new industrial restructuring by the convergence of the agriculture and fisheries industry (primary industry), manufacturing industry (secondary industry), and service industry (tertiary industry). With an eye on this trend, CALS must continue to be at the forefront, refining our education and research system with a specific emphasis on developing high-tech biomaterial and providing sound environmental resources to society. Beyond the boundaries of CALS, we will also endeavor to collaborate with other schools at Seoul National University at both the college and graduate levels.

The executive committee will do its best to rise to the occasion of present and future needs, to listen to the voices of all CALS members, and not to forget the spirit of serving the university.
