Lee In-bok, a professor of rural systems engineering at the Department of Landscape Architecture & Rural Systems Engineering at Seoul National University, was elected chairman of the Division of Precision Horticultural and Engineering among 14 divisions under the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS) on August 15, 2022. The news was introduced in ISHS's quarterly publication, Chronica Horticulturae Volume 62 No.3.
ISHS is a global independent horticultural organization, and since its establishment in 1959, it has been operating with the aim of attracting experts in all fields of horticulture and encouraging international cooperation to promote research on a global scale. Currently, more than 70,000 individuals, universities, governments, institutions, and companies in about 50 countries actively exchange information and collaborate for the sustainable development of horticulture through ISHS. ISHS hosts more than 40 professional symposiums each year to promote the development of technical topics in crop research, and publishes Acta Horticulturalurae based on the symposium and distributes it to all ISHS members, several academic libraries, and library sites. ISHS also publishes the European Journal of Horticultural Science (eJHS) in collaboration with the German Society of Horticultural Science (DGG), which covers research and review of important discoveries, new methodologies, and technologies in the field of horticulture on an international scale. The journal Fruits, published jointly with CIRAD in France, mainly deals with research and reviews on tropical and subtropical horticultural crops. Both eJHS and Fruits are available in print and online. Chronica Horticulturae is a regular publication that includes news by board, committee, department, symposium and conference schedules, major research news, and future events, with the election of Professor Lee In-bok as chairman. Chronica Horticulturae Vol. 62 No. 3 introduced Professor Lee In-bok's research career and major activities, reporting that he was elected chairman of the Division of Precision Horticultural and Engineering from 2022 to 2026.
Professor Lee In-bok obtained a master's degree in atmospheric and facility environmental engineering from Ohio State University and spent his post-doctoral course. Since then, he has worked as a special researcher at the Japan Institute of Agricultural Engineering (NIAE), and in 2001, he was an agricultural and industrial researcher at the Agricultural Engineering Research Institute of the Rural Development Administration. He was appointed as a professor at Seoul National University's College of Agricultural and Life Sciences in 2005, served as vice chairman of the Korea Livestock Environment Association and the head of the National Agricultural and Forestry Meteorological Center. On January 1, 2022, he was elected president of the Korean Society for Biological Environment Control. Professor Lee In-bok has actively conducted education and research in the fields of atmospheric environment and energy engineering such as environmental control, bioenergy, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) of agricultural facilities such as greenhouses and livestock farms. The professor has been involved in organizing ISHS-backed events for about 20 years, and has also been appointed chairman of the organizing committee for international symposiums on greenhouse environmental control, energy conservation and new technologies for crop production. Professor Lee also received regular invitations as keynote speaker or chairman at meetings for smart crop and livestock production. The future of the Professor Lee In-bok, who will serve as chairman of ISHS's Division of Precision Horticultural and Engineering for four years, is expected.
